For real, people. I heard another story on NPR this afternoon, a guy who got his visa revoked by the Chinese government for simply saying that genocide in Darfur is wrong. Oh, and saying that China could do better than to back the Sudanese regime responsible.
What he had to say, this member of 'Team Darfur,' was amazingly tame. I'd say it was even diplomatic. It was a lot nicer than what I'd say. I'd say it's yet another reason on a list that stretches as long as the Great Wall why the regime must be destroyed. Tibet, Mongolia, all these ethnic minorities the totalitarian 'Communist' government plays against each other would be better off as independent nation states. And I can't feature the Dali Llama imprisoning and systematically murdering political dissidents.
So don't watch the games. It's the only thing you can do, really. I suppose you could write a letter to the IOC, but really, if they truly cared they would never have allowed the games to go to a totalitarian state. Not to mention a polluted cesspool of a city like Bejing. If the athletes need gas masks, there's something wrong with the picture. Especially when they need them even when the cops aren't shooting gas canisters at them for being decent enough to speak up for the oppressed.
Remember 1980? The US wasn't the only country to boycott the Moscow games. 61 other countries didn't go either, as well they shouldn't have. That was another regime that needed doing, and it got done a few years later.
Russia isn't any paradise today, I know. But you don't see people standing line line ten hours for shoes that don't fit, running lumber trucks empty because they get paid by the mile and the gas mileage is better with an unloaded truck, etc.
