Mo's Birthday

It's actually still a couple days off, but I don't have the honyocks next weekend, so this was the weekend to have the grandparents down for cake and presents. It's a little bit tricky, because a lively house is not something Mo enjoys, much as she clearly adores her grandparents and the aunt and uncle who couldn't make it today.

She responded to the arrival of Grandpa by running to her room and covering up in bed. When I stuck my head in the door, she said, very clearly, 'Close the door.' When I responded that Grandpa Calvin was here, she said, 'No.'

It's not like I didn't prepare her for this, it's just sometimes a bit too much excitement. Especially when the two Grandmas got there to round out the cast. Grandma Mary went to check on her and when she opened the bedroom door, Mo said, 'I okay!' This, no doubt, because when she goes and burrows into her bed during the day, I come and ask her if she's okay fearing she's having a seizure (which is, regrettably, not unlikely).

Finally I went back there and asked her if she wanted to come blow out the candles on her birthday cake. That did the trick.

It can be hard to explain, for instance, when we are guests in someone's home, that Mo cannot suffer a lit candle. It's not because they distress her, it's because she thinks a lit candle simply must be blown out. She'll happily blow out the same candle again and again if you want to keep re-lighting it. Now that I think of it, I should use those trick candles that relight themselves, and she could have an absolutely delightful time blowing germs on the cake until the candles gradually burn down to the frosting.

So she came out and unwrapped a new comforter (coordinated with her bed sheets) to burrow into next time, and a huge stuffed puppy. The rest of her presents are what you might call intangible in the sense of unwrapping them. Not much way, for instance, to wrap up a trip to Zonkers...
