SRM & Steak & Shake

We went to Steak & Shake with my brother and his wife and my Mom for Mother's Day.

I personally was responsible for enough calories to power a small city. Mo kept asking for a bear out of one of those claw games. I kept explaining that while it looks like you can just drop fifty cents in and come away with the stuffed animal of your choice, the reality is it's a scam like a casino or health care reform.

Finally, on the way out I decided to spend a dollar to prove my point, give each girl a crack at an animal. And Em immediately won the one the waitress said she'd buy off her if she won it.

Mo wasn't as successful, but I decided to try it one more time and came away with the purple and yellow bear Mo said she wanted.

Em gave the waitress the animal. I think it was a combination of feeling like she's too old for stuffed animals and having won something she didn't really want mixed in with knowing someone else would truly like to have the thing. I wonder if it occurred to her that it was a teenager maybe three or four years her senior who wanted the thing she has 'outgrown.' Who knows, I was proud that a kid of mine would have such generous instincts.

Of course, having set out to prove a point, I got two stuffed animals for a buck and a half and now my kids will be convinced forever that I'm insane with that rap about the ripoff claw games. And I'll guarantee you this one won't be such a cheerful giver when whoever owns it gets it set correctly. Made in China or not, I can't imagine they're making money selling the animals for an average of six bits.

So much for teachable moments.

From there it was off to Mr. Worley's garden wonderland for some silver reflective mulch material.

Where we ran into one of my best friends in the whole world. She makes being wrapped in foil look good. So good, my daughters had to try it out.

The stuff makes sense, it reflects light up that would be absorbed by the ground, where presumably the plants get it. Plus, it seems like they'd dry faster after a rain.

Not only should this hold in moisture, keep the weeds (and from what I hear aphids) under control, but Tomoatosaurus Rex will be visible from space.
