I finally popped for a Niterider helmet-mounted light. As the daylight hours shrivel up, my commute involves more and more riding in the dark. The biggest advantage with a light like this is when a motorist is coming out of a parking lot or coming to an intersection, you can direct the light at their windows and know they see you.
They may not register it as a cyclist, but that's okay. Most people won't run their cars into UFOs either.
