Day Four, Part II: Czeching Out Wilson

This was a town we might have skipped except back when Grandpa Calvin was but a super lobster, he dated a Czech Chick who came from Wilson, Kansas.

So with a sign advertising Kolache, we had to stop. Actually, the sign said it was 'Your Flower and Kolache Center.' The town takes its Czech heritage seriously by what we could see.

I suggested to the girl running the Kolache Center (the pastries are made on premises and then frozen because, honestly, this time of year you just can't depend on wandering Lobsters to come and buy them up the same day) that Wilson would do well to erect statue of the good soldier Švejk. I've heard they have one in the center of Prague, with a plaque explaining how Švejk failed to join his regiment because 'it happened to me that I had one beer after another.'

She thought this sounded like a great idea, except she'd never heard of Švejk. And now, Googling this to find the statue, I think it's actually in Humenné, Slovakia. Looks like there's similar statues in Poland and Ukraine, too, so Jaraslov Hašek's legacy gets around.

The Czech Chick who worked the joint, she'd be welcome in Lobster Land any day, even if she doesn't know who Švejk is.

The local gas station, though, at least remembered to observe St. Patrick's Day, something I'd neglected.

We did spot the old town jail, which appeared to almost still be in use. Could have been a grain elevator if not for the bars on the windows...
