Security

Here we see a lock that might sell for almost as much as the bike it's securing. But something seemed wrong to me: this Kryptonite chain wasn't going through the body of the bike, only around it. But then I realized the front tire wasn't on a quick disconnect, and you'd have to remove the handlebars, too, to really get it free. This bike is probably safe indefinitely for simply being more trouble to steal relative to its fence value than a dozen other things on the same block.

Of course, if a thief is set on your bike, it is forfeit no matter your lock. Ask my friend Heather: I think she's had three bikes stolen in the past eight or nine years bike commuting to downtown Chicago.
